The simple fact that a 6-year-old was attacked for the fact that they are one of the AAPI population is uniquely disgraceful in and of itself. And yet, the audacity someone must have had to attack a child. An elementary school child. A youngster. Ones we are told to protect. The appalling and unspeakable action of someone to attack a child for a cause of hate. So many cases arise of people being talked down for being an Asian American or Pacific Islander. Many cases of people being assaulted for being an Asian American or Pacific Islander. But this one is different. A child suffers the effects. Even children are not immune to the effects of anti-AAPI sentiment.
One would not hurt a child, right?
Apparently, for the sake of AAPI hate, yes. This is a signal. This is how far it has come and rooted into the society. This is a sign to children in the AAPI community that no longer are they immune from the effects of the hate. A sign that many more need to be careful. A sign that the hate is progressing. A sign, of nefarious hate - hate that will not linger passively, but rather aggressively. A destructive hate.
The importance of dealing with the hate shows due to the fact we are not able to yet protect children from the effects of the hate. In a way, the hate has progressed - because the hate is growing faster than it can be stopped! How to stop the hate? Educating about hate. Suppressing existing hate. Perpetuate the prevention of AAPI hate, not the anti-AAPI hate. Educate in school curriculums by including AAPI history. Suppress the existing hate with community help and so called "civilian patrols" as they are happening now. Prevent AAPI hate - community awareness and spread facts.
This incident shows the sheer extent for which AAPI hate has become and how far it has spread. We must protect all and very importantly those who are young. Teenagers, elementary schoolers alike. Seniors, adults alike. This incident proves that everyone in the AAPI community is now vulnerable to the hate. We have to stop the perpetuation of this.
