The unique, coordinated racial effort - of a virus.
Updated: Feb 5, 2022
Efforts to change the effects of race on decisions have long been going on. Evidence shows itself again and again, seemingly without any end. Throughout the timeline of history, it shows itself. Today, it shows itself. An action as simple as people taking to the streets to protest proves that evidence, it shows itself.
What if it showed itself in a unique way? A way that not many would have thought of before it happened, or that would have been surprising. One way that turned one community against another of close proximity, or that horrifyingly inspired the terror and red target symbol on some of AAPI descent. Well, in a unique way, the presentation of COVID-19 brought such abominable actions to the light of America.
A unique way that little would have thought, before it happened. Not easy did COVID-19 hit, because COVID-19 hit hard. COVID-19 hit hard, and alongside as a tag team, the dramatic rise of AAPI hatred accompanied by the fall of it. Yet the blame of the apparent origin country of the virus that came along, would translate into the blame of those of the country's descent. In itself, problematic. Though, to some, a mistaken identity and belief, judgment of a person's descent, problematic. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders came under fire as a group. Unmatched, in a unique way that not many would have thought.
Surprising. A good word to describe. It's surprising that a virus could cause a social catastrophe. So, how surprising is it? Considering that we should mention the fall of COVID and the rise of AAPI hate, proven in one of many cities by the NYPD's data. NYPD's citywide 2020 data reached a number of 21 incidents. In contrast, NYPD's citywide 2021 data reached a staggering number of 104 incidents! 83 more incidents than 2020, a dizzying 395% increase! A surprising, surprisingly grave and sad feat.
And setting a terrifying red target on those of AAPI descent, turning communities against another. Fearful citizens have been targeted. Seniors, discriminated as those who are more vulnerable, are also targeted by athletically sound individuals - no match. Exampled, Hanako Abe of San Francisco's encounter with a young parolee, let go due to inconsistent time management and scheduling. Yet, those who try to enforce it are not immune to the red target. The NYPD's Asian Hate Crimes Task Force put officers that are multilingual in Asian languages on the front lines, the problem hotspots, as decoys. Now a permanent task force, the red target is put right on those officers as they are put directly in the line of fire. The community that searched for vulnerabilities clashed with those who seemed vulnerable as decoys.
All in all, uniquely, COVID-19 has caused discrimination and anti-AAPI sentiment. One show of a unique way that racism can show, in a despicably significant growth in number of incidents, and creating fear in a community of people. Be aware of what's happening. The seriousness of targeted crimes against the AAPI population has rose to be scarily substantial. Though anti-AAPI sentiment has been around, it has risen again, and a cause for concern. Anti-AAPI sentiment plagues the continental US and abroad more than ever. The COVID-19 virus is slowly fading, but this plague has just started.
